Metro Residences redevelopment

A significant milestone was reached on Monday 20 November 2017 when the last of the residents moved to their new homes, completing the Metro Residences redevelopment project after the Marsden Centre at Westmead closed in May 206.

Over five years, this project has delivered 64 new group homes for 285 people with disability. The project also involved the transfer of hundreds of FACS staff to new workplaces.

Many people from across FACS have contributed to this project including staff from Contemporary Residential Options, Disability Operations, LRC SSL, Districts, Human Resources, Legal Services and Asset Management and Procurement.

Rydalmere’s history spans almost 200 years supporting vulnerable people in an environment where residents, staff and family members formed relationships that have spanned decades. Many people with disability grew to adulthood at Rydalmere and staff trained as nurses, apprentices and domestic staff.

Just before the Rydalmere Centre closed residents, families and staff gathered for the launch of a new book, A Place of Change that covered the 200 year history of the Centre. The book captures the long and rich history of the Centre and will be a great memento for the people who have lived and work at the centre during the time has operated.

To the staff who worked at Metro Residences, thank you for your dedication, commitment and resilience over many years. And congratulations and well done to everyone involved – the outcomes you’ve all achieved will benefit people with disability long into the future.
